This song and video tackles the subject the way a Hip Hop artist should – the art of storytelling. Murs does a great job with the lyrics and then the video compliments it perfectly. This story humanizes the situation and might help non-gay people empathize with the struggle of growing up with these types of feelings in a society that mostly does not accept it, although with videos like these that is slowly changing. Props to Murs for even wanting to talk about this and bring it to light. Straight people watching this get to walk in a gay teens’ shoes, while gay teens will hopefully see part of their story represented.
“I just felt it was crucial for some of us in the hip hop community to speak up on the issues of teen suicide, bullying, and the overall anti-homosexual sentiment that exist within hip hop culture.” – Murs
